WhatsApp New Features

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces in a Facebook post that they are working on a new feature called ‘Call Links’. As the name suggests, the call links feature lets users share a link where others can join the audio or video call by just tapping on the link.

More importantly, group video calls on WhatsApp will now support 32 users. Previously the limit was eight users for group video calls on the platform.

It is interesting to note that apps like FaceTime, Zoom, and Google Meet already have had this feature ‘Call Links’ for quite some time now.  But given how popular WhatsApp is in India, the ‘Call Links’ feature will definitely be more convenient for joining calls on the platform. The feature will start rolling out sometime this week.

WhatsApp Announces Call Links feature for voice calls.

WhatsApp would earlier only allow a maximum of eight people on a video call. Now, it plans to take the count to 32, and will not be charging users for the feature or adding a call limit on the calls, which we are quite sure would be quite resourced intensive for the company to handle.

The option to create a call link can be found in the calls tab. Users can create a link and share it with friends and family for them to join the call. However, there remain a few questions about the feature. It’s not clear as of now if a person who does not have a WhatsApp account can join the call with the link. We are also not sure if call links can be used to schedule a video call.

The Call Link feature is rolling out this week to all users, but it will be done in phases. WhatsApp automatically adds new features without you having to update the app manually, so keep checking your app to see if the feature has arrived.

How to Enable the Call Links feature?

The Call Links feature is rolling out to everyone globally in a phased manner. This means that if you still haven’t received the feature, it will be available soon. Users can head over to their respective app stores to update the WhatsApp app to the latest version. Android users can head to the Google Play store, while iPhone users can go up to the App store.

Using the online status hiding feature will be easy. All users will need to do is: open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Account > Privacy > find a “Last seen and online” option on the top of the screen > tap on it to access the feature.
