The auction of the 5G spectrum began for the first time in the country on Tuesday, which continued till late at night. During this period, bids worth Rs 1.45 lakh crore have been made by telecom companies. The 72 GHz spectrum is being auctioned by the government and the process is expected to be completed on Wednesday.
The 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands attracted strong bids – the mid and high-end bands seeing keen interest. Bids were also received for the 700 MHz band, the Minister told reporters. He described the participation of four bidders as ‘strong’.
The auction process will be completed by August 15
Union Telecom Minister Ashwani Vaishnav said that the four-stage auction process has been completed on the first day. He said that the spectrum allocation process would be completed by August 15, 2022, and 5G service would also be started in some parts of the country by September-October, 2022. Four companies Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, and Adani Group took part in the auction. These four companies have already deposited an amount of 21,800 crores with DoT. The fifth round of bidding will be held on Wednesday. After the completion of the auction process, the spectrum will be allotted to these companies. After this these companies will establish their network and services will start.
5G service will be available in many cities by the end of 2022
The Telecom Minister said that by the end of the year 2022, the general public will start taking advantage of the 5G service in many cities of the country. On the price of 5G service, he said that it is the industry’s job to decide the tariff, let’s see what they fix. It is expected from the government that by September-October, 5G mobile service will start in some parts of the country.
How Fast Is 5G?
Well, a 5 GB movie can be downloaded in 35 seconds using 5G internet as against 40 minutes in 4G; 2 hours in 3G; and 2.8 days in 2G, according to Bipartisan Policy Center.
The auction is being held for spectrum in various low (600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz), mid (3300 MHz), and high (26 GHz) frequency bands.
Bidding for each spectrum band
According to experts, with the amount of spectrum that has been auctioned so far. The DoT can get a maximum revenue of Rs 1 lakh crore.
All four applicants — Ambani’s Reliance Jio, Mittal’s Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, and an Adani group firm “actively” participated in the auction of the 5G spectrum. That offers ultra-high speeds (about 10 times faster than 4G). Lag-free connectivity, and can enable billions of connected devices to share data in real-time.
