Airtel rolls out 5G services: How to activate 5G on a smartphone

Activate 5G on Smartphone

5G technology is now available in India, with prime minister Narendra Modi launching its services on Saturday. At the launch event, Airtel Bharti Enterprises chairman Sunil Mittal said that its 5G service will launch in 8 cities. These cities are Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Siliguri, and Varanasi.

The carrier will cover all urban areas by March 2023 and the entire country by March 2024 with its 5G services, he added. Therefore, if you are a resident of one of these cities, use an Airtel SIM, and have a 5G smartphone, you can use this next-generation technology by changing the network settings of your device.

Requirements to use 5G services on a smartphone

Users need to be in a locality where 5G services are available. Airtel has mentioned that the 5G service is currently only in places where 5G towers are installed. A 5G compatible smartphone is required to run the 5G services. Today, most of the smartphones launched under 20,000 fulfill the criteria. Users would also need an active Airtel connection, meaning that the existing 4G SIM is 5G ready.

How to check a smartphone and location support 5G?

Airtel has confirmed that the users would be able to check the 5G availability in their region along with 5G compatibility for their existing smartphones using the Airtel Thanks app upon the 5G launch.

If you can’t see the 5G network signal on your device could be that the 5G support is not enabled by the manufacturer. Most 5G smartphones in the market have 5G disabled but fret not, it can be enabled via an OTA update. So, you can expect an update on your 5G-enabled smartphone from your manufacturers shortly. Realme has reportedly started rolling out 5G support for its compatible devices via the OTA update.

How to change network settings in a 5G smartphone?

(1.) Go to ‘Settings’ on your smartphone and tap on ‘Mobile Networks’ or ‘SIM Cards & Mobile Networks.’

(2.) Now, navigate to ‘Network Mode’ or ‘Preferred Network Type’ and select 5G network type.

(3.) After selecting the 5G (Auto) option, the device will search for 5G signals and when this network is available, it will appear on the screen.

5G tariffs

Much like 4G, you will need a 5G tariff to use 5G services in India. Airtel is likely to roll out its 5G tariffs in the country soon. If a statement by a senior company official is anything to go by, then the Airtel 5G services will be available at existing 4G rates. Jio, on the other hand, has claimed that its 5G rates will be the most affordable than anyone else in the world.
