- Apple is reminding developers about its upcoming account deletion requirement.
- Apps that support account creation must also support account deletion.
- The requirement kicks in on June 30, 2022.
Apple has reminded developers that apps that support account creation must let users initiate deletion of their account, along with personal data, within the app starting June 30.
Apple offering paid online group services will also have to use Apple’s in-app payments from June 30.
WWDC 2021 event
During its WWDC 2021 event, Apple laid down a slew of policy changes for the App Store, adjusting the rules for everything from bounty hunting to whether or not Roblox is a game. Now, with the WWDC 2022 event ready to start on June 6th, Apple is reminding developers that it’s ready to flip the switch on some policy updates that were previously delayed.
App Store guidelines
Apple last year announced a change in the App Store guidelines that would require all apps that support account creation to offer an in-app option for letting users delete their accounts. However, this requirement has been delayed twice. Now the company has set a new deadline for developers to update their apps according to the new guideline.
Starting June 30, 2022, all apps available in the App Store that somehow let users create a new account must also offer a way to let them delete that account if they want to. These changes have been detailed in App Store Review Guidelines 5.1.1(v), which explains what apps can and cannot do when it comes to account sign-in.
“If your app doesn’t include significant account-based features, let people use it without a login. If your app supports account creation, you must also offer account deletion within the app. Apps may not require users to enter personal information to function, except when directly relevant to the core functionality of the app or required by law.”
The New App Store guidelines require apps offering paid online group services to do so via in-app purchase. This means that apps offering real-time person-to-person services between two individuals (tutoring students, medical consultations, real estate tours, or fitness training) must use purchase methods other than in-app purchases. Apple introduced this change in its guidelines back way before WWDC 2021 and it has so far delayed its implementation thrice. The first delay came in 2020 while the second delay came in the spring of 2021. After that, Apple delayed the implementation of this policy until January 2022. However, the company delayed its implementation to June 30, 2022.
Here are Apple’s account deletion requirements:
The account deletion option should be easy to find in your app.
It’s insufficient to only provide the ability to temporarily disable or deactivate an account. People should be able to delete the account along with their personal data.
Apps in highly-regulated industries may need to provide additional support flows to confirm and facilitate the account deletion process.
Follow applicable legal requirements for storing and retaining user account information. This includes complying with local laws in different countries or regions. As always, check with your legal counsel.
