Apps Can Now Integrate OpenAI’s AI to Control Computers
Artificial Intelligence is evolving fast, and AI-powered agents—software that can complete tasks on their own—are becoming a big part of the future. OpenAI is stepping up to help developers create their own AI agents by launching a new Responses API. This tool provides the essential building blocks for AI agents that can search the web, browse files, and even operate a computer on behalf of users.
Why OpenAI Is Focused on AI Agents
Olivier Godement, OpenAI’s head of product for its platform, explains why the company is making this move. “Some agents we can build ourselves, like Deep Research and Operator,” he says. “But the world is incredibly complex, with endless industries and use cases. That’s why we’re excited to give developers the foundation to build agents that fit their specific needs.”
What Can the Responses API Do?
The Responses API is packed with features to make AI agents smarter and more useful:
- Web Search: Built on the same model that powers ChatGPT’s search function, this tool allows AI agents to fetch real-time information from the internet while using OpenAI’s latest models (GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini). It even provides citations for the information it finds.
- Computer Automation: This feature, powered by OpenAI’s Operator model, lets AI agents complete tasks on a computer—handling repetitive or complex actions automatically.
- File & Document Search: AI agents can quickly scan large volumes of documents to find relevant information. This could be useful for customer support teams looking through FAQs or legal assistants searching past cases.
Introducing the Agents SDK
Alongside the Responses API, OpenAI is also launching the Agents SDK, a tool designed to help developers manage and coordinate multiple AI agents.
Nikunj Handa, product manager for OpenAI’s API team, describes the difference between the two tools:
- The Responses API is like a single tool that allows AI to complete a specific task.
- The Agents SDK acts as a conductor, helping multiple AI tools work together to solve complex problems efficiently.
This means developers can now create AI workflows where different agents collaborate toward a common goal, making AI more powerful and versatile.
OpenAI’s Future Plans
The Responses API and Agents SDK build on OpenAI’s existing developer tools, such as the Chat Completions API, which allows AI to respond to user queries.
One major change coming in 2026 is the replacement of the Assistants API with the Responses API. OpenAI says the new API is built using developer feedback, with significant improvements over its predecessor.
With these new tools, OpenAI is making it easier for developers to build AI agents that can search, analyze, and automate tasks, pushing the boundaries of what AI can do.
