Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has installed a new supercomputer ‘Param Pravega’. It has been installed under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). Now, It is claimed that it is the most powerful supercomputer of its kind in the country. Also, It is the largest supercomputer in any academic institute. IISc’s Ultimate Speed has a supercomputing capacity of 3.3 petaflops. 1 petaflop is equal to 10 million quadrillion operations per second. Many components of Param Praveg are manufactured and assembled in India. According to IISc, this supercomputer is expected to power various research and educational activities.

As announced by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the institute has successfully installed and commissioned the new supercomputer – PARAM Praveg. As mentioned, the new supercomputer has a total computing capacity of 3.3 petaflops. Param Praveg has been designed by the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
Specifications of Param Pravega
Ultimate momentum has features consisting of a mixture of heterogeneous nodes. It uses Intel Xeon Cascade Lake CPU and Nvidia Tesla V100 GPU. The supercomputing capability of 3.3 petaflops is achieved using the ATOS BullSequana XH2000 series system.
Speaking of node configuration, Ultimate Speed includes two master nodes, 11 login nodes, two firewall nodes, four management nodes, one NIS slave, and 624 compute – CPU GPU – nodes. These nodes are further divided into 3 categories. These are regular CPU nodes, high-memory CPU nodes, and GPU nodes.
The regular CPU nodes are powered by a 2.9GHz Intel Xeon Cascade Lake 8628 CPU. It is available in a two-socket configuration, with 48 cores per node, 192GB of RAM, and a 480GB SSD. Param Speed has 428 regular CPU nodes. High-memory CPU nodes have 768GB of RAM per node, and IISc’s supercomputers have 156 such nodes.

The supercomputer is powered by a 2.5GHz Intel Xeon G-6248 CPU with 40 GPU nodes in the same RAM and storage configuration. Each node’s GPU consists of two 16GB Nvidia V100 Tesla (HBM2 device memory) GPUs.
This is not IISc’s first supercomputer. In 2015 it acquired SahasraT and was the fastest supercomputer in India at that time. IISc has used SahasraT for research on COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. IISc aims to promote such research with utmost fervor.
