However, IIT researchers have developed a special technology for chargers on EVs, which could reduce the cost of electric vehicles in the future, and make it possible for carmakers to keep the cost of electric vehicles down.
The ET report says that IIT BHU researchers in collaboration with IIT Guwahati and IIT Bhubaneshwar have developed a special technology for the on-board charger at the Varanasi campus, which eliminates the need for an extra power electronic interface used for propulsion mode. The report quoted news agency PTI as saying that the team developing the technology says that lab-scale development has already been done at IIT (BHU) and the process of up-gradation and commercialization is in progress.

Talking to the agency, Rajiv Kumar Singh, Chief Project Investigator, IIT BHU said “Rising prices of petrol and diesel in the country are worrying for the common man. Amidst the rising cost of petroleum products and rising pollution levels, EVs are powered by conventional IC engines. is the best option.” However, he further added that “lack of high power off-board charging infrastructure compels automakers to incorporate onboard chargers into vehicles. The owners of these [electric] vehicles charge their vehicles through outlets, and that makes electric vehicles very expensive.”
Singh further states that the researchers have proposed an onboard charger technology that would eliminate the need for an additional power electronics interface required for propulsion mode, allowing the components involved.
Chargers can cost up to 40-50% less
Due to this the components involved can be reduced by 50%. This charger can be set up in such a way that it can work as a charger for charging mode and an inverter for propulsion mode.
Singh said that due to this technology, the cost of onboard chargers will be reduced by about 40-50% compared to existing chargers. “The cost reduction in chargers will also bring down the cost of EVs in the future,” he added.
The team says that a major electric vehicle manufacturer in the country has shown interest in this technology and the company is ready to develop a full-fledged commercial product, which can be installed on existing electric vehicles. However, the team declined to name the company.
