Elon Musk will make his own smartphone if Google & Apple ban Twitter

Elon Musk

Someone on Twitter questioned if Musk would make a new phone if Twitter were removed from the Google Play or Apple App Stores, and Musk said he would.

In case the microblogging service is banned from the iOS and Android app stores, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has threatened to make a “alternative” phone.

Twitter user Liz Wheeler asked Musk, “If Apple & Google boot Twitter from their app stores, @elonmusk should produce his own smartphone. Half the country would happily ditch the biased, snooping iPhone & Android. The man builds rockets to Mars, a silly little smartphone should be easy, right?”

Can Apple and Google remove Twitter?

If Musk does not comply with their policies, Apple and Google could easily remove Twitter from their app stores. Musk has previously stated that the rollout of Twitter’s membership model will begin next week. In exchange for a checkmark next to their names and access to exclusive services, Musk expects to charge $8 per month for the plan. Revenue for Twitter, and not only Twitter, could increase if this rollout is successful. Even tech giants like Apple and Google stand to gain from Twitter’s premium subscription scheme.

To refresh your memory, both Apple and Google receive a cut of subscription fees paid through their respective services. Both of these tech behemoths take 15 percent of developers’ subscription fees. The discount ranged from -30% to -15%. Even though other developers have to pay it, Elon Musk has always been critical of Apple and Google for demanding the fee. He added that they are “10 times greater” than they should be, and he referred to them as a “tax on the internet.”

Tech expert Mark Gurman has speculated that Apple and Google would remove Twitter from their app stores if Musk tries to circumvent their payment system. Content control is another reason the two internet titans can kick the microblogging service to the curb.

While Elon Musk hopes that Twitter will be available through both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, the new owner of the microblogging network has warned that he will create a competing smartphone in the event that this becomes necessary.

“I certainly hope it does not come to that, but, yes, if there is no other choice, I will make an alternative phone,” he wrote. It must be mentioned that Google removed a conservative social media site named ‘Parler’ in the aftermath of the Capitol Hill siege on January 6, 2020.

Although launched in 2018, Parler grew in prominence after the ouster of Donald Trump from Twitter. In a statement, Google justified its decision to remove Parlier from its app store.
