  • The app is also adding a screenshot warning feature for disappearing messages.
  • This feature will be made available in the coming weeks.

Meta’s Facebook Messenger is gaining some new features today for its end-to-end encrypted chats. The features that Messenger received include screenshot detection, message reactions, typing indicators. The features have been rolled out for Messenger’s opt-in end-to-end encrypted chats. The screenshot detection feature and the message reactions feature are something WhatsApp users have been waiting to get for the longest time. However, now that Facebook has made the features available to Messenger, they may soon be unveiled on WhatsApp as well.

For disappearing messages in end-to-end encrypted chats, you’ll get a notification when someone takes a screenshot. Oh, and GIFs and stickers are finally available for end-to-end encrypted chats, as are reactions, replies, and typing indicators. The update will also add a message forwarding option. Once you tap it, a share sheet will be displayed, using which you can share messages with one or many people or groups. You’ll also be able to create a new group before forwarding a message.

Facebook Messenger New Features

End-to-end Encrypted Group Chats and Calls in Messenger: The company began testing end-to-end encryption for group chats, including voice and video calls last year, and now, the feature is available to everyone. Now, users can choose to connect with their friends and family in a private and secure way.

Screenshot notifications: The company is introducing a new notification when it detects that someone screenshots a disappearing message.

Group Chat Poll Games

Facebook is bringing poll games to Messenger as a way for friends to stay entertained in group chats. Users can now play “Most likely to” in polls as a way to discover what their friends think about topics like who is “most likely to send me cash on Facebook?” You can write in any prompt you want to poll your contacts about any topic.

GIFs and Stickers: To let users level up their chats and express themselves better, GIFs and Stickers are now available for a more feature-rich chat experience in end-to-end encrypted chats.

Reactions: With reactions, users will be able to tap and hold a message to bring up the reactions tray to make their choice of reaction. They can also double-tap a message to “heart” it, much like what they can do on a Facebook post.

Typing Indicators: To help users feel more present in their encrypted 1:1 and group chats, typing indicators are now available so that they can see when others are typing, similar to what we have seen on WhatsApp and Instagram.
