Facebook Users Flock to X After Unexpected Outage
Facebook users around the world faced unexpected disruptions on Thursday morning (February 27) as the social media giant suffered a major outage. The issue, which began at around 7:36 AM, left people unable to access their feeds, send messages, or even log in to their accounts.
According to DownDetector, over 18,000 reports of the outage poured in, with most users struggling to access Facebook’s website. Instead of their usual feed, they were met with an error message that read, “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.” Interestingly, while the desktop site was down, the Facebook mobile app seemed to function normally, allowing users to browse and interact without major issues.
Statistics from DownDetector revealed that 82% of reported problems were related to the website, while 10% of users had trouble logging in. Another 7% reported issues with the app itself. The outage also affected Facebook Messenger and Instagram’s messaging services, temporarily preventing users from sending messages.
Users Flock to X to Vent Their Frustrations
As Facebook remained down, frustrated users turned to X (formerly Twitter) to check if others were experiencing similar problems. Screenshots of the error message quickly spread, with speculation about the cause of the outage running wild. Some users even made light of the situation with memes and jokes.
Thankfully, the situation started improving about 30 minutes after the peak outage time at 1 PM EST. Reports of issues gradually declined, suggesting that Facebook’s services were being restored.
Despite the widespread disruption, Meta has yet to release an official statement explaining the cause of the outage.
