Google Hangouts shutting down in November, here is how to download all your old chats

The American tech giant, Google announces that it will be going to shut down its Hangout platform and Google Chat as its default chat application. The Company will replace the Google Hangouts application with the upgraded Google Chats applications. The application has started sending mail to the users advising them to download their old chats which will not be migrated.

Starting from November 1, 2022, People will not be able to access Hangouts on the web. In the year 2013, Google introduced Google Hangouts. After a great journey of nine years, the app is going to close soon.

The Company will replace it with Google Chats on the web releases in the year 2022. The Company is now urging the users to back up their chats and switch to the new platform.

Users will not be able to access Google Hangouts app after November 1, 2022

Google assures that the Company will migrate the chat history as well. Still, for the safety of important data, you must download the chat history.

The Company said in a blog post:

“Who wishes to keep a copy of their Hangouts data to use Google Takeout to download their data before Hangouts is no longer available in November”

So, if you carry important data on Google Hangouts and want to save all your conversations, then save the archive using Google Takeout

Here is how you can download your data from Hangouts and export it in a downloadable archive file.

How to download Google Hangouts chat history via Google Takeout

  • Open Google Takeout and sign in with the Google account you use in Hangouts.
  • Select only the Hangouts apps and click on Next Step.
  • In the delivery method, click on the one-time download for the backup.
  • Select the file type.
  • Click to export the media.
  • Google will send you a message once it starts copying files from Hangouts.
  • You will receive an email once the process is complete.
  • Download the file received in the email.

Google says that moving to Chat will give users a better way to connect and collaborate with others. It notes that users can edit Docs, Slides, or Sheets with side-by-side editing. Chat will also give users access to Spaces, which is a dedicated place for topic-based collaboration. Users will also get access to @mentions to notify someone in the group and will also have the ability to send GIFs.
