- Google Play Games is coming to Windows PCs in 2022.
- This is not a partnership with Microsoft, but a standalone application Google has been developed.
- Google’s app will be available on Windows 10 and newer.
Google now wants to bring its multi-screen gaming platform to Windows PCs. This expansion is pitched as a continuation of its mission and as something desired by the Android developer community. In a surprise announcement at The Game Awards, Google revealed that it’s bringing Android gaming to Windows PCs next year through a desktop Play Games app. Google’s app will be available on Windows 10 and newer.
Google’s announcement comes months after Microsoft started testing Android apps on Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft has built an underlying Windows Subsystem for Android, which is capable of running Android apps from a variety of sources.
In addition to the app, Google will be directly distributing content, which includes both emulated Android titles and games that run natively on Windows. There will be seamless game experiences that let players go between mobile and desktop. Google will also allow users to simultaneously switch between Android phones and tablets, Windows PCs, and Chromebooks. However, the Alphabet-owned company has not confirmed if the complete lineup of Google Play titles would be available on the new PC service.
Users can soon play Android games on Windows PCs
Since it’s the Google Play Games platform, you’ll need to log in with your Google account, just as you would do on Android. A Google spokesperson told us that “players will be able to pick up right where they left off from their pocket to their tablet, Chromebook, and on desktop via this new Google Play Games PC application.” That should mean your saves and other information will transfer from platform to platform.
The new move by tech giant will bring one of the largest gaming ecosystems from Android to Windows PCs. It will allow players to access hundreds of Android titles from their desktops.Google didn’t share a ton of details about how exactly the experience will play out for users, but we’ll learn more about the upcoming desktop application in the future.
