Google rolling out Air Raid Alerts for Android phones in Ukraine

Google is rolling out an Air Raid Alerts system on Android phones in Ukraine. This is to act as a supplement to the country’s existing air raid alert systems. This will be based on the alerts provided by the government. The company will also be highlighting the Ukrainian Alarm app to Google Play users.

Dave Burke, vice president of engineering at Google, posts a tweet. The post says that the company is helping millions of people in Ukraine. It is also rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system.

“The system leverages our low latency alert mechanism we built for earthquake alerts. The air raid system is supplemental too and shares the same triggers used for the country’s existing air raid alert systems,” Burke tweeted.

“Tragically, millions of people in Ukraine now rely on airstrike alerts to try to get to safety. At the request, and with the help, of the government of Ukraine, we’ve started rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system for Android phones in Ukraine. This work is supplemental to the country’s existing air raid alert systems, and based on alerts already being delivered by the Ukrainian government,” Google said in a blog post.

Google also brings a Ukrainian Alarm app

Separately, Google has also highlighted a Ukrainian Alarm app, which sends notifications about possible air raids in their region to Ukrainian users. “We are highlighting the (Ukrainian Alarm) app to Google Play users in Ukraine. This app was created by Ukrainian developers in cooperation with the Ukrainian government to give people better air raid warnings,” Google said.

Previously, Google had waived off international calling fees from Ukraine and from the U.S. to Ukraine on Google Fi. It aslo waived off calling fees to Ukraine for people using Google Voice for the time being.

“The system starts rolling out today. This will ramp up to target all Android phones in Ukraine over the next few days. Thankful to our eng/product/UX teams for racing to get to a soln in short order,” said Burke on Twitter.

In the same blog post, It also announces that it is working towards globally limiting recommendations for many Russian state-funded media outlets. In Europe, all apps from Russian state-funded media outlets gets remove from the Play Store.
