- Instagram rolls out Age Verification feature in India.
- It provides three ways of verification- uploading a selfie video, uploading a document, and Voucher
- The feature will roll out to other Countries by the end of the year
Meta-owned Platform Instagram keeps on adding new features to make the platform engaging. In a recent development, Instagram brings a new feature of age verification to make the place safer for its users. Instagram introduces these features in a few regions at the start of the year. Now, the platform is bringing this feature to more Countries including India, and Brazil
Meta reveals that the test to verify user age on the platform is being expanded to India and Brazil, and would also be offered to users in the United Kingdom and European Union before the end of 2022.
Instagram Age Verification Features arrive in India
Meta will offer users three ways to verify their age. Those selected in the trial phase can upload a government-approved identification document to verify their age. Alternatively, users can record a video selfie through the Instagram app, for which Meta will “use technology” to verify the same. Finally, Meta will also offer a way for a user’s mutual friends to ‘vouch’ for the former’s age.
With video selfies, users can choose to follow on-screen instructions to guide them toward taking a video. The social media platform has partnered with Yoti, a company that specializes in online age verification without compromising the privacy of the users.
If a user chooses to verify their age by uploading a video selfie, it will share the selfie with Yoti. It will estimate the age based on the facial features and share that estimate with Instagram. The image is then deleted by both Meta and Yoti, according to the company.
The feature will arrive in the remaining Countries by the end of the year
The social vouching option allows the users to ask their followers to confirm their age. The verification request must be confirmed by at least three followers within three days to complete the process. Alternatively, users can also share their IDs to verify their age.
The option is presently only for Instagram. However, presently it is not clear if the same functionality will roll out on Facebook and WhatsApp as well.
