Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram has started testing the chronological feed, as it promised last month. According to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, the firm wants to make it easier for people to see how they want it to look. This feature is already in trial for some accounts or will be rolled out in the next few weeks.

Test the ability to switch between three different categories

He also noted that Instagram will soon allow users to toggle between three different feeds, Home, Favorites, and Following. Mosseri said in a tweet, “We are starting to test the ability to switch between three different categories – Home, Favorites, Following (two of which will give you the option to view posts in chronological sequence) on your home screen.
Home will be similar to Instagram’s current feed, which ranks posts based on your interests, while Favorites will be a supported feed for the friends you care about most. Following will be a chronological feed only for the accounts you follow.

Mosseri recently said that the platform would double down on the video and focus on the reels.

Instagram to focus on messaging and transparency

Instagram has been making some changes to the way it handles videos in recent months. In October, it spun off the IGTV brand to bring long-form videos to the main feed. However, users will have to tap on the reels to watch the full video. To the creators, Mosseri said that Instagram will focus on messaging and transparency in 2022.

Instagram’s algorithmically arranged feed.

Earlier in 2016, Instagram chose to shut down the chronological feed, which used to show posts in chronological sequence. It has switched to an algorithm-based feed that shows you posts that are of interest to you. However, since its introduction in 2016, users have been criticizing Instagram’s algorithmically arranged feed. Users have complained about not seeing posts from the accounts they follow or seeing old posts at the top of their feeds.

Instagram will soon allow users to toggle between three different feeds, Home, Favorites and Following, to give users the option to view posts in chronological sequence.
