Instagram rolls out Parental Supervision tools, ‘Family Centre’ in India

Instagram finally rolls out its new Parental Supervision tools in India. The new functionality will let parents control how their kids use the platform. The platform is also introducing a Family Center, a new place for parents and guardians to access supervision tools and resources from leading experts.

Meta has been working with experts, parents, guardians, and young people from India, to understand the needs of parents and young people.

Natasha Jog, head, public policy, Instagram, Facebook India (Meta) releases the statement:

“The safety of our community is of paramount importance to us at Meta. Our intention is to strike the right balance for young people’s desire for some autonomy when using Instagram, but also allows for supervision in a way that supports conversations between parents and young people when it is helpful”

Meta first launches the features of Parental Supervision Controls and a Family Center in the US in March of this year and is now rolling it out to India. Meta will be working with, India’s leading and trusted discovery platform for parenting needs, to engage with parents and spread awareness of the tools.

Parental Supervision Controls

The new supervision tools on Instagram will allow parents to supervise elements like how much time their kid spends on the platform. The tools will also enable them to set limits, as well as schedule breaks throughout the day.

Further, Parents will also now be able to view what accounts their kid follows. Further, they can also check the accounts that follow their young ones. This lets them keep tabs on who their kids connect with on the platform.

Parents will also now be notified when a kid blocks an account on the platform. So that they can discuss the matter in case the child needs help.

How to Initiate Parental Supervision Control feature:

To initiate supervision, parents, and guardians will be able to send supervision invitations to their kids’ accounts. Instagram has also said that more features will be added to the platform over time.

Family Center

Instagram also announces Family Center, an education hub. It is a place where parents and guardians can access resources from experts via helpful articles, videos, and tips. These will cover topics like how to talk to young people about social media. Among the resources will also be video tutorials on using the new Supervision Tools on the platform.

It is available in English and Hindi language. Parents can also watch video tutorials on how to use the new Supervision Tools to get the most out of the platform.
