Apple yesterday released iOS 16.1 to the public after a little over a month of beta testing. iOS 16.1: New Features

 iCloud Shared Photo Libraries

You can create and share pictures in a single album with up to five other people, and anyone can add, edit or delete photos. A button in the camera app will also let you take pictures that automatically share to that photo library.

Everyone who is a member of an ‌iCloud‌ Shared Photo Library can add, edit, favorite, caption, and delete photos, and users can have one personal library and one shared library. There are tools for swapping between two libraries, and choosing to upload photos to the Shared Library directly from the camera, when other library participants are nearby, and more.

Live Activities

You can see the live progress of your pending Uber ride, Starbucks order (below, right), or your favorite sports team’s score without leaving the Home Screen. Now, these updates can also appear within the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro range.

Clean Energy Charging support

Apple says the iPhone will try to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available.

Apple Fitness+ on iPhone

Until now, you’ve needed an Apple Watch to access the Apple Fitness+ subscription service on your iPhone. That’s no longer the case. You’ll be able to participate in workouts, but you’ll still need an Apple Watch for full synergy with your workout stats.

New Matter Standard Support

You can control smart home devices such as locks, doorbells, lights, and more that support the new connectivity standard. The matter was created so that smart devices work with any home hub, whether it’s made by Apple, Google, or Amazon

Wallet Key Sharing

Car, hotel room, and other keys that are available in the Wallet app can be shared securely with others through Messages, WhatsApp, and other messaging apps.

Bug Fixes

  • Deleted conversations may appear in the conversations list in Messages
  • Dynamic Island content is not available when using Reachability
  • CarPlay may fail to connect when using a VPN app.
