Meta Sets Up Online Store So You Can Buy Clothes For Your Digital Avatar





  • Recently, Meta launched a feature that will allow users to create their digital avatars.
  • Now, it has launched the Avatars Store for digital clothing items.
  • Customer will have the option choose from the virtual outfits designed by Prada, Thom Browne and Balenciaga so far.

Facebook owner Meta Platforms is launching a digital clothing store where users can purchase designer outfits for their avatars. Virtual outfits designed by fashion brands Balenciaga, Prada and Thom Browne will be available for purchase. A Meta spokesperson said they would be price between $2.99 and $8.99, much less than the real outfits by those designers. Prada’s Matinee ostrich leather bag, for example, sells for $10,700. Zuckerberg said he hoped to build the store out into an open marketplace where developers can create and sell a wide array of digital clothes.

Meta Avatars store:

  • Online stores to roll out next week only in select countries.
  • Customer will have the option choose from the virtual outfits designed by Prada, Thom Browne and Balenciaga so far.
  • While  there is still more information to come on the pricing, according to Reuters report, a Meta spokesperson said that the clothes will price between $2.99 and $8.99, which is quite less than the real outfits by those designers.
  • The company said it is beginning to roll out parental supervision tools to all Quest headsets.

Avatars are usually set by the users who involves in taking exercise classes or conference calls or play video games. These digital clothes will only be available on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram at the initial stage and will be expanded eventually.

On June 18, 2022, Mark Zuckerberg posted on his official Facebook account, stating:

“We’re launching our Avatars Store on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger so you can buy digital clothes to style your avatar.” Adding to it, Zuckerberg mentioned that “Digital goods will be an important way to express yourself in the metaverse and a big driver of the creative economy.” Furthermore, the CEO of Meta added that he is excited to add more brands and bring the experience to VR as well, including items from Prada, Thom Browne and Balenciaga.

These advanced creation tools from Meta are another step in that direction, and it’s interesting to consider the scope of possibilities they could facilitate in this respect, and where such developments will get to over the next ten years. For an accurate avatar system to work, and create a fully customized depiction of you in 3D, you’ll need to scan yourself within a digital camera room
