Whatsapp Security Tips: 9 Tips to Make WhatsApp More Secure and Private

Whatsapp tips and tricks

One of the world’s most widely used instant messaging platforms, WhatsApp also happens to be one of the safest methods of communication. This does not exclude you from taking additional measures to ensure your WhatsApp experience is a little more focused on privacy and online security. Here are  WhatsApp security tips to help you further protect your private chats and files.

1. Turn on security notifications

When a new phone or laptop visits an active conversation, a unique security code is produced for each phone. Additionally, WhatsApp is capable of notifying users when the security code changes. In this manner, you can ensure the security of the encryption by verifying it with your friend via a different messenger.

Go to WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Security > Show security notifications and change the toggle to green, to enable security notifications.

2. Enable two steps verification

One of the finest things you can do to increase your privacy on WhatsApp is to enable two-step verification. The process is also among the simplest because all you have to do is enable this built-in option to add an extra layer of security to prevent unauthorized logins.

Click the “Enable” option after going to WhatsApp Settings/ Account/Two-Step Verification. A six-digit special PIN that will come in handy if you want to switch to a different device will be required of you. Your account cannot be accessed by anyone else without this six-digit pin.

3. Verify that sensitive conversations are encrypted

WhatsApp encrypts all chats by default, but there are situations when you want to make sure. Sharing private information with a trusted person, such as a credit card number, should always be done in that way.

Start a discussion with that contact to confirm the encryption. Tap the contact’s name in the chat window, then tap Encryption.

The security code is this 40-digit sequence. By comparing the digits, having the contact scan the QR code, or scanning the code of your contact using the “Scan Code” option, you can manually validate this code. It’s advisable to use a separate messenger to confirm that these numbers match, according to security expert Martin Shelton.

4. Preventing spam on WhatsApp

Another important thing you can do to improve your WhatsApp experience is to block spammers. Thankfully, WhatsApp allows you to block and report new messengers with a single tap if they send you a message.

You can still block them if you’ve already spoken with a contact. From the contact chat page, you can block them. On the same page, you can also unblock the contact.

5.WhatsApp Cannot Be Password Protected

Unfortunately, WhatsApp cannot be password-protected. To lock it on Android, WhatsApp advises utilizing a third-party locking program, as it has said expressly.

There is just no way to password-protect WhatsApp on iPhones. Whether using Touch ID or a passcode, Apple prohibits it.

Your only hope is the reoccurring 2FA pin for the time being. Other than that, using a password or pattern lock on your phone is the only way to protect WhatsApp from prying eyes.

6. If you lose a phone, log out as soon as possible

Getting your smartphone back could be incredibly challenging if you lose it with your SIM inside. Thankfully, operating systems like Android and iOS enable remote phone wiping.

However, you may immediately buy a second SIM card and put it in a new or spare phone if you only want to limit access to WhatsApp using the old phone. Utilize your new SIM and OTP to log into WhatsApp after downloading it to this new phone. You will immediately be logged out of your older phone when you log into your account from this new device.

7. Hide Whatsapp media from the gallery

It’s simple to stop WhatsApp photos and videos from showing up in your phone’s gallery. Simply disable the setting by going to WhatsApp- Settings- Chats- Media Visibility.
Once completed, WhatsApp media files may only be viewed through the app; they are not accessible through other gallery apps.

8. Disable WhatsApp’s read receipts.

Your WhatsApp account has the read receipts functionality turned on by default. When people see the messaging, it leaves two blue markings on them. However, if you can reveal this feature, you also won’t reveal whether or not you have read the messages. If you want the most privacy possible when using WhatsApp and don’t want to be bothered in any way, this option can be useful.

On iOS, navigate to Settings > Account > Privacy and turn off the read receipts setting. You must select the menu button on an Android device, then select Settings > Account > Privacy.

It’s important to keep in mind that, even if others cannot tell if you read the message, the functionality will still function in WhatsApp groups since, regardless of who has turned off this feature, the mark turns blue when all the members have seen the message.

In WhatsApp groups or private chats, anyone can read messages without triggering the blue mark by employing additional techniques. Using an application to read the message as a notification rather than through WhatsApp, for instance, or disabling WiFi.

9. lowering your WhatsApp visibility

You can adjust various settings by going to the privacy section of your WhatsApp account. If you don’t want anyone to see your most recent activity, you can control who sees it. Additionally, you control who sees your “about” and profile photo. If you don’t want anyone to view them or if you don’t want anyone outside of your contacts to see them in particular, do this.
