Google is making yet another major effort to prevent third-party call recording Android apps. From May 11, Google will prohibit all call recording apps from the Google Play store. In fact, all legitimate call recording apps for Android will cease to function. So, if you want to record voice calls on your phone, you’ll have to rely on your smartphone’s native call recording feature. If your smartphone lacks a built-in call recording feature, you will be unable to record calls after May 11.

To stay in compliance with the app store, Truecaller will be removing the call recording feature from May 11. The call recording feature requires Accessibility API and that won’t be accessible to third-party users. All Android users with Android 10 or newer operating systems won’t be able to access features of the third-party call recorder app. However, some phones come with built-in call recorders such as Xiaomi and Redmi. These will continue to be available. Even Google Dialler that is pre-installed on phones will be able to make use of the call recording feature.

Truecaller to stop offering its Call Recording feature

Truecaller released a statement regarding this change that said, “Call Recording on Truecaller was free for everyone, permission-based, and required users to enable the feature using the Google Accessibility API.” The statement also added that the company introduced this call recording feature for all Android smartphones after receiving an overwhelming consumer demand. However, as per the updated Google Developer Program policies, they can’t offer the feature any longer.

Furthermore, the smartphones which ship with the Google Dialer pre-installed will still be able to record phone calls, however, it will depend on the region and manufacturer. This change will affect many users who often use the call recording feature. This may lead to users downloading the recoding apps from outside the Google Play store, which may make them vulnerable to data theft by malicious apps.

Google has taken this step for privacy concerns and to avoid data theft by malicious apps. But this has majorly affected the developers dependent on the Accessibility API. Well, it seems many Truecaller alternative apps will soon end the call recorder feature in the coming days.
