Twitter May Soon Let Users Add Bitcoin, Ethereum Addresses to Their Profiles for Tips

  • Twitter may soon add bitcoin and ethereum payments to its Tip Jar feature.
  • The new addition will be aimed to improve the Tip Jar function.
  • Beta testers are not available at this time.

Twitter appears to be developing functionality that enables users to add Bitcoin and Ethereum addresses to their profiles. The plans to add Bitcoin and Ethereum are in alignment with Jack Dorsey’s announcement in July where he said Bitcoin is going to be a big part of Twitter’s future. Twitter has already added payment modes such as Razorpay, Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal, and Venmo to its accounts.

Dorsey’s payments platform, Square, has also laid out its plans to include cryptocurrencies within its platform. Square had invested over $170 million in Bitcoin in February this year and had also made an investment in October 2020.

Bitcoin support is confirmed to be a part of Tip Jar on Twitter

Italian mobile developer and self-described “leaker” Alessandro Paluzzi tweeted screenshots on Thursday that showed BTC and Ether (ETH) wallet address options in the settings toolbar of the app version of Twitter. While the news is unofficial at this stage, Twitter product lead Kayvon Beykpour retweeted Paluzzi’s post about the BTC tipping feature with the lighting and “soon” arrow emoji.

Beykpour’s retweet doesn’t necessarily mean he’s confirming the feature, but he did add a lightning emoji and a sign that says ‘soon’ in his tweet. The feature has also been reported by Macrumours earlier. On August 31, the publication reported that the ability to add bitcoin and ethereum wallet addresses to Tip Jar accounts has been spotted on Twitter’s beta version as well.

In May, Twitter introduced its Tip Jar feature, so creators, journalists, and nonprofits could monetize their tweets as tips. The company initially enabled users to share links to their Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal, and Venmo accounts to receive tips from their followers. However, this was just the beginning as the platform is adding cryptocurrencies as a new payment option.

Dorsey’s Square Inc has outlined multiple BTC initiatives in 2021, including an assisted custody wallet and BTC-based decentralized finance services. The idea of digital gold being used to tip content creators on Twitter is unsurprising, given that Dorsey is a BTC maximalist.
