After acquiring Twitter, Elon Musk is making lots of changes to the platform. A few major highlights include charging users for verification and rolling out the edit button for all users. Presently, the Edit button feature is only available to Twitter Blue Subscribers.
What is Edit Tweet?
For the unversed, Edit Tweet is a feature that lets people make changes to their Tweet after it’s been published. People will be able to edit the Tweet maximum of five times in the 30 minutes following their publication. Edited Tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label so it’s clear to readers that the original Tweet has been modified. Tapping the label will take viewers to the Tweet’s Edit History, which includes past versions of the Tweet.
After testing the feature with a small group of people, the feature rolls out to Twitter Blue Subscribers last month. Now, Elon Musk is expanding the availability of the feature by providing it to all.
Twitter will now charge $8 per month for the blue tick. Other features that Elon is bringing are the verification checkmark, users will also get access to features like fewer ads, priority in replies, mentions, and the ability to post longer videos than the current limit of 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
Charges for Verification Badge
According to the reports, Elon Musk will give a time of 90 days, which he calls it “multi-month grace period”, to users with a blue tick including celebrities, journalists, and other notable influencers. After this period is over, they will need to start paying for the verification badge.
The Government Accounts will stay verified in the region where Twitter is not chargeable. There are many people who are not happy with Elon’s decision of charging for the verification badge. Meanwhile many supported the move saying this will help Twitter shoot down the bots and other spam accounts.
The badges will be part of an $8-per-month Twitter Blue subscription, an increase of $3 over the current $4.99 per month price, which will also include priority in replies, mentions, and search, the ability to post long video and audio, and half as many ads as non-paying users.
Elon Musk’s move of charging for a Verification badge created a Controversy. Some critics have accused Musk of “charging for free speech,” in the sense that users who don’t pay up will have their posts diminished or silenced. Others however have supported the move, agreeing with Musk that it will help weed out bots and other spam accounts.
A report reveals that these changes might come into effect as soon as next week i.e. November 7. Billionaire Musk and a close cadre of advisers are considering a host of changes to the way Twitter is run and makes money, and it’s possible that the timing for the subscriptions and edit-button rollout could change.
It’s been three days, Musk has moved quickly to make changes at Twitter, first by changing its homepage for logged-out users. He fired the top executives of the Company. He is also working on laying off 50 percent of Employees to cut the cost.
