WhatsApp testing feature to allow users to create links to join calls on the messaging app

WhatsApp is rolling out a new update through the Google Play Beta Program, bringing the version up to 2.22.6.5. WhatsApp is testing a new feature that allows creating links to join WhatsApp calls, for a future update!

WhatsApp has also integrated its joinable calls feature — which lets users join an ongoing group video directly into group chats. The latest update will give users the option to join an ongoing group call right from the group chat tab. Joinable calls were first introduced on WhatsApp in July last year.

The instant messaging app has now brought several improvements to the feature by integrating it with WhatsApp groups. Among the changes introduced with the latest update, group call notifications will now display the name of the group instead of the names of the participants.

Earlier, you can invite participants to a WhatsApp group only if you are the admin of the group. When you create an invitation link, you can share this link with anyone, and whoever clicks on that link will be able to join the WhatsApp group if they have a WhatsApp account.

The exact user interface may differ slightly depending on whether you’re using the iOS or Android version of the app. However, the process is mostly the same.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to create a public link that people can use to join your WhatsApp group:

  1. Open WhatsApp and select the New chat icon.
  2. From the menu, select New group.
  3. Once the group chat is open, click on the group name and scroll down.
  4. Select Invite to Group Via Link from the participant’s section.

You can share the link, copy the link or use the QR Code to invite people to your group.

With the new feature, users will see a new “tap to join” option in their call log on WhatsApp, that will allow them to join an ongoing group call even if it was missed originally. Those who want to use the new feature, can simply go into their Call log on WhatsApp, then tap the call they’d like to join. This will open the call info screen. From there, users can tap “Join” to enter the missed group call. This will, of course, work on group calls that are already ongoing.
