WhatsApp Testing ‘View Once’ Feature for Windows Users, New Pop-Up Menu for Phone Numbers in Chats

WhatsApp begins testing a new ‘View Once’ feature on Windows. This will let users access photos and videos that they can view only once on the app. Currently, the feature is on a beta release of WhatsApp’s Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app that is currently for testing purposes. WhatsApp has also separately started testing a new pop-up menu for phone numbers you get in a message to let you choose between dialling the number or adding it to contacts by tapping on it in the chat.

According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp for Windows beta 2.2212.2.0 releases early testers to view photos and videos using the ‘View Once’ feature. However, the beta version does not include the option to send multimedia content that you view once.

The ‘View Once’ feature first rolls out to Android and iPhone users last year. It allows users to make the photos and videos they share on WhatsApp disappear from the chat once they are viewed by the recipient. The photos and videos shared using the feature can, however, be saved by the recipient by simply taking their screenshots or screen recording on their devices.

WhatsApp Tests View Once Feature on UWP App

The feature helps improve the privacy of WhatsApp users when sharing media content on the platform. However, the recipients can still take a screenshot or screen recording of the view once content.

As for the availability of the new feature in the WhatsApp UWP app, WABetaInfo reports that it is currently under development and is rolling out to only some beta testers. Hence, it might take some time for it to become available in the stable version.

New Pop-up Menu for Phone Numbers on Android

WABetaInfo also discovers a new pop-up menu for phone numbers in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android (v2.22.8.11). This new feature will show a pop-up menu with different options when a phone number taps in a chat window.

If the phone number is not on WhatsApp, users will get two options – dial the number via the default dialer app or add it to their contacts. However, if the number is available on WhatsApp, they will get an additional “Chat with” option to instantly start a conversation with the contact.

WABetaInfo reports that the new pop-up menu is rolling out to some beta testers. The beta release also shows a green dot in WhatsApp Settings to inform testers about checking the reminder for its Terms of Service update in India. The update is a part of the obligations that WhatsApp and other social media companies have due to the new IT rules in the country.
