WhatsApp is finally giving Android smartphone users the ability to transfer chats to iOS or iPhone devices. The update was shared on Tuesday by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, of Meta via this Facebook post.
WhatsApp does not transfer your call history
He says the new feature will allow you to securely switch between Android and iOS to transfer your WhatsApp chat history, photos, videos, and even voice messages. Having said that, WhatsApp does not transfer your call history through this method. All this takes place with end-to-end encryption in place, he adds.
WhatsApp has more than 450 million users in India and the ability to seamlessly switch data from Android to iOS will be greatly appreciated by users.
“We’re adding to WhatsApp the ability to securely switch between phones and transfer your chat history, photos, videos, and voice messages between Android and iPhone while maintaining end-to-end encryption. This is a top requested feature. We launched the ability to switch from iPhone–>Android last year, and now adding Android–>iPhone as well,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page.
WhatsApp for Android version 22.214.171.124
As WhatsApp official documentation notes, there are a couple of limitations to the feature. First off, you’ll need Android 5.0 Lollipop or above installed on your Android device, while the iPhone should be on iOS 15.5 or later. The data migration feature also requires you to install the Move to iOS app on your Android device. Furthermore, you should be running WhatsApp for Android version 126.96.36.199 and WhatsApp for iOS version 188.8.131.52 or above for the feature to work.
For the feature to work as intended, your iPhone should be factory reset to pair with the Move to iOS app, both your devices should be connected to a power source, and they should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
“Move Data from Android”
The transfer process only works on new or factory reset iPhones and makes use of Apple’s existing Move to iOS app for Android. (Which already helps move contacts, calendar entries, SMS messages, and more). During iPhone setup, select the “Move Data from Android” option, and then follow the steps in the Android app. Once the iPhone is fully set up, open up WhatsApp and sign in using the same phone number. Your preexisting Android chat history should appear.
In order to start the transfer, you’ll need to be running Android 5 or up on the Android device and iOS 15.5 on your iPhone. Unfortunately, if you already have a preexisting iOS chat history, then the imported Android history will overwrite it.
