Windows 11 is an upcoming major version of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. Announced on June 24, 2021, with an expected release in late 2021, Windows 11 is the successor to Windows 10, released in 2015. Windows 11 will be available as a free upgrade to compatible Windows 10 devices through Windows Update.
Features of Windows 11:
1. Fluent Design System
According to Microsoft, the design of Windows 11 is “effortless, calm, personal, familiar, complete, and coherent.” The redesign focuses on simplicity, ease of use, and flexibility, addressing some of the deficiencies of Windows 10. Windows 11 also introduces “Mica”, a new opaque material that is tinted with the color of the desktop wallpaper.
The Start menu has been significantly redesigned in Windows 11, adhering to the principles of the updated Fluent Design System. The menu now features a glass-like, translucent appearance with shadows and subtle effects. The corners of the buttons and the menu itself have been rounded.
3. File Explorer
The File Explorer has also undergone revisions in Windows 11. Its design, which has remained almost unchanged since Windows 8, now follows the updated Fluent Design System. A new command bar replaces the ribbon interface from previous versions of Windows.
The Taskbar’s design is also refreshed in Windows 11. The buttons are center-aligned by default, although they can be moved back to the left. New and redesigned buttons are also present for Widgets. The taskbar is permanently stuck at the bottom edge of the screen and cannot be moved to the top, left, or right edges of the screen in Windows 11.
5. Snap layouts
The window snapping functionality has been enhanced with two additional features; “snap layouts” allow the user to select a pre-determined layout they want to use for tiling multiple windows onto a display. This is similar to the FancyZones utility in PowerToys for Windows 10. The tiled arrangement of windows can be minimized and restored from the taskbar as a “snap group”.
6. Touch improvements
Windows 11 also features improvements to touch-based interactions. New and improved gestures can be used on tablets and touchscreens. A new, customizable keyboard, with support for swiping and a mode for one-handed use, is featured.
Windows 11 also brings improvements to inking and voice typing, and with certain pens, Windows 11 will support haptic feedback. A new Dynamic Refresh Rate setting allows devices to automatically boost the screen’s refresh rate when scrolling or inking.
