  • The new feature will discourage creators from cross-posting on other platforms without a watermark.
  • The feature is similar to TikTok’s red and blue watermark on any video downloaded from the app.

YouTube Shorts has been quickly picked up popularity, and now the short-form video app is picking up another idea from TikTok, watermarks on downloaded videos. Whether you watch short-form videos on YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels, you’ve probably noticed some creators who re-upload their content from TikTok. It’s usually pretty obvious, as TikTok has long applied a watermark to any video downloaded from the app with the platform’s logo and the creator’s username. Now, YouTube Shorts will adopt the same watermark practice.

Announced on a YouTube support page, the company confirmed that creators who download their own videos will see a YouTube Shorts watermark on the video. The change is being made to ensure that “viewers can see that the content you’re sharing across platforms can be found on YouTube Shorts” if the content post to another short-form platform. At this time, it’s not entirely clear what these new watermarks will look like, but it seems same to assume it will be a slightly animated version of the Shorts logo, much like TikTok’s watermark.

The feature is similar to TikTok’s red and blue watermark on any video downloaded from the app. The new YouTube feature will roll out on desktop in the coming weeks and will then expand to the mobile app in the coming months. The other short-video competitor, Instagram Reels, lets users download a draft Reel without watermarks. YouTube has been heavily pushing Shorts since it launched the product in 2020. The company set aside $100 million to dole out to creators who make Shorts, and shortform clips are taking up more and more real estate on the YouTube app, including in recommendations and a dedicated Shorts tab.

For instance, in May 2022, Meta improved monetization opportunities for Reels creators to encourage them to produce more content and as part of a larger plan to compete with TikTok. Even Instagram added new tools to its Reels feature in June 2022 to bring it in line with TikTok. It’s no surprise that YouTube has stepped it up to make Shorts a formidable force in the short-form video space. YouTube pays creators up to $10,000 to create Shorts through its $100 million Shorts Fund to incentivize creators to produce original and engaging content.
