Zomato is known for its food delivery service in India. The company has now revealed that the Zomato app will also allow you to order groceries soon. Well, this is not the first time that Zomato is foraying into the grocery delivery segment.
Zomato preparing to launch IPO
Zomato entered the grocery delivery space when the food delivery service was halted during the first lockdown phase. The company once again plans to resume online grocery delivery services. Zomato on July 14 announced its plans to foray into grocery delivery ahead of the launch of its initial public offering (IPO).
The facility will be available through Zomato Food App
Gaurav Gupta, Co-Founder, Zomato, said during a virtual conference, “Last year when we did groceries, it was the need of the hour for our customers. People were not using food delivery and had to go to their homes. I was in need of grocers so that they could cook all the food at home. And we, because of our network, we’re able to serve our customers quickly. Now, we will come back to see what happened, in an effort to see what happened. As for how we can build this ultra-local part of the business.” This service will be available through the Zomato Food app.
Zomato buys 9.3% stake in Grofers
For the grocery delivery project, Zomato has acquired a 9.3 percent stake in the online grocery delivery platform Grofers. Gupta said, “We are actively experimenting in this area and have recently invested $100 million for a minority stake in Grofers to get more exposure in that area. We are using our platform on a pilot basis. But we are in the process of starting a grocery delivery marketplace.”
They will get a tough challenge from Zomato’s new plan
During last year’s grocery delivery phase, Zomato partnered with Vishal Mega Mart and other FMCGs for door-to-door delivery of groceries. With the service, Zomato will challenge apps like BigBasket, Grofers, and Swiggy to deliver groceries to your doorstep.
Zomato is an Indian multinational restaurant aggregator and food delivery company founded by Pankaj Chaddah and Deepinder Goyal in 2008. Zomato provides information, menus, and user reviews of restaurants as well as food delivery options from partner restaurants in select cities.
