Netflix Brings Option To Pay For Subscriptions Via An External Link On iOS, Bypasses Apple’s App Store Fee

Highlights:

  • Netflix for iOS now gets an External Subscription Option.
  • This will allow them to pay for the subscription without the involvement of the App Store.
  • This will help Netflix avoid paying the 30% commission fee to Apple.

Netflix is rolling out an update for its iPhone and iPad apps which will allow new subscribers to choose a plan and subscribe through a link to its own website.  In previous years, it’s a feature Apple wouldn’t allow Netflix to take advantage of, since it would mean circumventing the in-app purchase link that works through Apple’s App Store and – as a result – Apple not getting its percentage of the fee.

Apple had to allow Netflix and other companies from linking their websites following a settlement with Japan’s antitrust regulator last year. It had to loosen its App Store rules to permit external links on so-called ‘reader apps’, which feature content like music, videos, ebooks, and more. The Cupertino company still retains control over the criteria for qualifying an application as a reader app.

You Can Now Subscribe to Netflix via iOS App

The Netflix app on iOS now displays a prompt when users tap the subscription button notifying them that the transaction will not be a responsibility of Apple. Hitting ‘Continue’ takes users to the Netflix website via a Web browser of their choice where they can complete the subscription process. This will help Netflix avoid paying the 30% commission fee to Apple, which has been under the scrutiny of many for a while now. Although, a fee will still be charged.

However, you should know that this option is currently for new subscriptions. Netflix still doesn’t allow for in-app payment options for existing subscribers and had excluded the feature back in 2018. It remains to be seen if this option will soon reach old subscribers too. Meanwhile, new subscribers can still take a sigh of relief and so can Netflix, which can now ditch Apple’s hefty fee.

So, if you’re not a Netflix subscriber yet, you can sign up from the Netflix app on iPhone and iPad now.
