- Disney Plus now supports Apple’s new group watch feature SharePlay.
- Apple users will now be able to stream thousands of movies and series on Disney Plus.
- Apple started rolling out its anticipated SharePlay feature to iPhone users with its iOS 15.1 update.
Disney+ has expanded its watch together feature called ‘SharePlay’ for Apple iPhone users to stream movies and shows with their friends and family via FaceTime. With this new feature, users with iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV iOS 15.1 update, can enjoy Disney content in sync with family and friends while on a FaceTime call. If you’re watching on your iPad, for example, your video will appear as a picture-in-picture tile while you navigate across other apps on your device.
Last year, Netflix introduced a Netflix Party feature, now called Teleparty. It lets 1000 participants for one Teleparty session. On the other hand, Amazon Prime Video also has a similar feature called Watch Party that lets users watch movies and shows together. Amazon allows up to 100 members in a Watch Party session.
Disney+ SharePlay group viewing feature
“SharePlay brings a whole new way to connect, share experiences, and have fun together on FaceTime,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “SharePlay leverages Apple’s integration of hardware and software to deliver a magical experience across iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, and works with many Apple services as well as some of the most popular apps in the App Store.”
Disney says the feature will be compatible globally across the entire Disney+ catalog from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. This includes its new titles like Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye,” “Welcome to Earth” and its upcoming Disney+ premieres, like “Encanto,” which arrives on Christmas Eve (December 24), and the “The Book of Boba Fett,” which becomes available starting on December 29.
Once updated, users will be able to host and attend SharePlay sessions that allow up to 32 people to co-watch Disney+ together. This could make for an easy way for a family who can’t be together for the holidays to have a Disney movie night. To stream Plus content using Apple’s SharePlay feature, make sure your Apple devices are updated to iOS 15.1, tvOS 15.1, or iPadOS 15.1 or later. Sadly, SharePlay isn’t a workaround for free streaming, so you’ll need to have an active Disney Plus subscription to use the feature as well.
