Meta is introducing new updated 3D Avatars across Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram and is now also introducing the feature in India for the first time, allowing users in the country to create 3D Avatars of themselves, in a push towards its ambition of being a metaverse platform. Your 3D Avatar is a cartoon version of yourself that is supposed to capture how you look in a virtual setting.
3D Avatars have already been rolled out
It might not be an accurate facsimile of your real appearance, but rather, a digital version of yourself. These 3D Avatars have already been rolled out to many other countries and are now being made available in India. Once you create an Avatar on Facebook, you can use it on Facebook, the Messenger App, Instagram Stories and DMs, and the Meta Quest headset.
Tech giant Meta has rolled out 3D avatars to Instagram stories and DMs along with updated avatars for Facebook and Messenger. New avatars are more customizable, expressive and easy to use. While it’s new to Meta platforms, these avatars have been there for years on Snapchat and OEMs also have their own version of it – Animoji for Apple, AR Emoji for Samsung and more.
This update has come after five months since Meta has rolled out 3D avatars for Instagram in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The 3D avatars were first rolled on Facebook back in 2020.
This new update also includes new facial shapes and assistive devices
for people with disabilities such as cochlear implants and hearing aids for both ears in different colors. Stickers on Facebook, Instagram DMs, and Messenger will also include these elements.
The update adds Cochlear implants and over-the-ear hearing aids (for one or both ears) in a variety of colors, and on all platforms including Virtual Reality. It also includes wheelchairs, which will appear in stickers on Facebook, in Messenger chats, and in DMs on Instagram.
The company said it is also improving the look of Avatars, subtle adjustments have been made to certain facial shapes and skin shaders to make avatars more authentic. It will continue to add more options over time based on feedback from the community, the company noted.
