Popular instant messaging app WhatsApp on Wednesday announces the launch of the chatbot ‘Bol Behen’ in India. This is in collaboration with nonprofit Girl Effect. This is to help adolescent girls and young women with concerns and queries around general health and sexual wellbeing.

The Chatbot will be in both Hindi and English. It is design to provide content on topics such as sexuality, relationship, and reproductive health in a self-paced chat experience on the instant messaging app. Users can also ask their own questions on different topics.

 The “Bol Behen” (Speak, sister in English) chatbot can be accessed with a phone number or via an invite link on the web. Users can access the Bol Behen chatbot by sending ‘Hi’ to the number +91-7304496601 on WhatsApp or by visiting its profile on the Web.

WhatsApp says that the new chatbot is targeted at adolescent girls and young women in the Hindi belt of India who typically use lower-end smartphones with slower or limited internet bandwidth.

It will reach millions of girls across India to answer their health curiosities.

In 2020, Girl Effect first launched the Bol Behen chatbot on Facebook Messenger in India. It claims to have scale up to reach over 100,000 conversations, with over 1.6 million messages received. The chatbot inspires by Girl Effect’s initial chatbot Big Sis which launches in South Africa to offer non-judgmental advice on topics including sexual health and relationships.
