Key Specifications:

  • WhatsApp begins beta testing of the ability to send files up to 2GB in size.

  • At the moment, WhatsApp users can only transfer media files up to 100 MB in size.

WhatsApp begins beta testing of the ability to send files up to 2GB in size. According to WABetaInfo, a limited test is underway in Argentina, and select people will be able to share media files up to 2 GB. It tends to work with WhatsApp beta for Android v2.22.8.5, v2.22.8.6, and v2.22.8.7, as well as for iOS. At the moment, WhatsApp users can only transfer media files up to 100 MB in size.

As per a report, this ability to share a huge media file is being tested on both WhatsApp for iOS as well as for Android. The news comes a few days after WhatsApp for Android beta users gets the ability to pause and resume voice message recordings.

WhatsApp to Soon Allow Sharing Files up to 2GB in Size

If WhatsApp decides to launch it for all its users, it will be going to be an essential feature. With constantly improving camera resolutions of the latest smartphones, media files are also bulking up, making it harder for users to share these files across people and devices. This way, users can easily send large files over WhatsApp. So users won’t have to depend on other platforms or software for the same.

WhatsApp usually compresses media files when they are sent via the app, apparently forcing users to send images as documents to retain the content’s original quality. However, it’s not yet clear if WhatsApp users will be able to share images in their full resolutions.

The increased limit of 2GB could be to counteract against arch-rival messaging app Telegram, which has had that capacity for years, making WhatsApp a viable and convenient option for sharing huge files considering its popularity.
