WhatsApp has introduced a number of privacy-oriented changes and features over the years. From the ability to disable your read receipts, or blue ticks, to even hiding your profile picture from certain or all contacts. However, one aspect of WhatsApp has not changed for a long time and that is the ‘Online’ indicator that pops under your name/number on others’ devices every time you open the app and use it. The new feature has been spot in the 184.108.40.206 Android beta version of WhatsApp.
Now, it seems WhatsApp is finally working on this, and may introduce a change to the app in the future that lets you turn off the ‘Online’ status indicator entirely, letting you open the app whenever you want, without letting your friends, family, colleagues or pretty much anyone finding out. As per a recent report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing an update for the Last Seen and Online Status. There could soon be an option to decide who can see when you were online on the messaging app. Currently, you can only hide your Last Seen everyone, contacts, or specific contacts.
WhatsApp testing feature to let you hide your ‘Online’ status
Sharing updates about the same, WABetaInfo tweeted, “WhatsApp is working on the ability to hide the online status! WhatsApp is finally listening to user feedback by developing a feature that lets us choose who can see when we are online on WhatsApp!”
In related news, WhatsApp is reportedly updating the time limit to delete messages for everyone. The messaging platform is rolling out the update via the Google Play Beta programme, with the 220.127.116.11 beta for Android. As per the report, WhatsApp is extending the time limit for the ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature to two days and 12 hours from the existing one hour, eight minutes, and 16 seconds time options. The longer time frame would help users to delete wrongly sent messages.
In addition to the ability to hide the online status and time limit extension, WABetaInfo has spotted releasing a redesigned context menu on Windows beta. This feature is available to users who have installed the latest WhatsApp beta app for Windows 2.2225.2.70 from the Microsoft Store. The report includes a screenshot showing the redesigned context menu, giving users an idea of the shortcuts offered. As seen in the screenshot, there is a paste, undo and select all the text options. The text can be formatted in bold or italic. The functionality is expected to undergo changes before the final release.
