WhatsApp’s new Communities feature aims to bring related group chats together

The Instant Messaging Platform finally rolls out the much-awaited Communities feature for all users. The CEO and co-founder announce the arrival through a post. The communities feature will allow users to have multiple groups together under one umbrella. It will also let them organize group conversations on the platform with a “level of privacy and security not found anywhere else.

Announcing this feature, Mark Zuckerberg said:

“Today, we’re launching Communities on WhatsApp. It makes groups better by enabling sub-groups, multiple threads, announcement channels, and more. We’re also rolling out polls and 32-person video calling too. All are secured by end-to-end encryption, so your messages stay private.”

Besides the Communities Feature, WhatsApp is set to increase the number of users in a group to 1024 and add new updates to groups, including in-chat polls and 32-person video calling.

Communities Feature

The Communities feature will help you to organize different subgroups together in one place. The Communities feature aims to help organizations, clubs, schools, and other private groups better communicate and Organize.

WhatsApp said in a statement:

“With Communities, we’re aiming to raise the bar for how organizations communicate with a level of privacy and security not found anywhere else. The alternatives available today require trusting apps or software companies with a copy of their messages – and we think they deserve the higher level of security provided by end-to-end encryption.”

Anyone can run a community on the platform and then invite multiple groups to join in. However, these groups will only be added to the Community if the admins accept the invite.

How to Access the Communities Feature?

This feature rolls out for both Android and iOS users. Users can find the Communities tab at the top of their chats. Tap on the Communities and start adding existing groups. The admins can send important updates here.

WhatsApp will continue with end-to-end encryption in Communities as well.  Only the members of the group will be able to read the message. Also users’ phone numbers will also be hidden from the wider group. It is only visible to admins and others in the same sub-groups as you. Unlike Facebook groups, Communities are hidden. There is no way to look up or search the Community group. You will only be able to join once you get the invite.

The Communities participants can have a choice to report abuse, block accounts, and leave Communities they no longer wish to be a part of.

WhatsApp Other New Features

These Communities feature also brings other functionalities such as admin controls, support for sub-groups and announcement groups, 32-person voice and video calls, larger file sharing, emoji reactions, and polls. These features will be really helpful while handling large communities.

Meta has been working with over 50 companies across 15 countries to build communities to meet their needs. The company said it received positive organizational feedback on its new tools.
