Just like Short form Video Platform TikTok, YouTube is introducing Shopping Features to Shorts. Soon viewers will be able to purchase items through Shorts. Besides this, the Streaming Platform also working on a new Commission for the creators of the site. The Platform takes this step amid decreased ad spending and an Economic downturn
YouTube Shorts Shopping Feature is currently under testing
Presently the video giant is testing Shopping features with U.S Creators and audiences in the US, India, Brazil, Canada, and Australia. This feature will allow Influencers to tag their own product in Shorts. This will let the viewers see the product and make a purchase.
One of the Google Spokesperson said:
“Viewers in the US, India, Brazil, Canada, and Australia can see the tags and interact with them and we’ll continue to bring tagging to more creators and geographies”
This Shopping Feature is expected to roll out in the mentioned regions by 2023. The Company is planning to expand this shopping feature to other creators in the future.
Why Shopping Feature?
YouTube Shorts have more than 1.5 billion monthly users. Despite the success, YouTube’s quarterly ad revenue declined by 1.9 percent year over year. In order to broaden its revenue stream, The platform comes up with the idea of a Shopping feature
In addition to the Shopping feature, The Company is experimenting Affiliate Marketing feature in the U.S. This feature will let creators earn Commissions through Purchases of the recommended products through Shorts and regular videos. According to the Company, the testing of the feature is currently in the early days and will be going to roll out globally by the next year
The Company announces the Shorts Shopping feature a few days after Tiktok announced a similar feature- Shop Program. This feature lets users shop for products directly in the app. TikTok has already tested this feature in
A spokesperson of YouTube says:
“We firmly believe YouTube is the best place for creators to build a business and shopping is a piece of that”.
At the beginning of the year 2023, the Creators will be able to apply for the Company’s Partner Program if they fulfill the certain condition. Creators can apply for the program if they meet a new Shorts Specific threshold of 1000 Subscribers and 10 million Shorts views over a period of 90 days. After that, they will be able to earn 45 percent of ad revenue from their videos.
In related news, the Streaming Giant rolled out YouTube Shorts to Smart TV Screen for a better experience. The platform explains that YouTube Shorts on the TV will come with a white border along with a background theme that is based on Short’s main color.
However, YouTube Shorts videos on TV will not Autoplay. The users will require to manually go to the next Shorts by using their remotes.
